Quaalup Homestead Wilderness Retreat is nestled on 40 acres of native bush surrounded by the western part of the Fitzgerald River National Park - a stay here is truly a unique experience. The heritage listed Quaalup Homestead built in 1858 gives guests an impression of the early settlement days. It is open to visitors. The Retreat offers charming self contained two person units, a secluded two bedroom chalet, three bedroom cabin, on site vans and camping/caravan accommodation. Enjoy our botanical signposted Nature Walk, discover the world famous flora of this NP. Quaalup is a "Land for Wildlife" property and uses solar power only. The closest accommodation to the unique Southern Right whale nursery at Point Ann.

Location:

The Fitzgerald River National Park, recognised by UNESCO as a World Biosphere Reserve, is one of Australia’s most botanically significant parks with more than 1800 species,beautiful wildflowers to be found all year round,eg splendid Hakea Victoria and the Qualup Bell. The Park has magnificent scenery, mountain ranges, red cliffs, rivers, inlets and incredible white sanded beaches with the crystal clear blue waters. The beach of Point Ann is a unique breeding area for Southern Right Whales during July to October up to 50 animals have been counted along this coast. More kinds of animals live in this Park than in any other reserve in South West Australia; 184 bird species are found here, including rare species like the Ground Parrot.

Things to do:

Guests can enjoy nature walks with views to West Mount Barren and many species of wildflowers, canoe down the Gairdner River,wake up to the bird calls, dream away under star studded skies and explore the Parks attractions, eg Point Ann beach, walk up West Mount Barren, with most comfortable distances.

Local Attractions:

The Park is blessed with a magnificent scenery, mountain ranges, red cliffs, rivers, inlets and the incredible white sanded beaches with the crystal clear azure blue waters of the southern ocean.

Getting There:

The Quaalup Homestead Wilderness Retreat is situated right in the Fitzgerald River National Park, on the South Coast of Western Australia, between Albany(180km) and Esperance(340km). Devil Creek Road is the only 2WD(gravel) access into the National Park and to Quaalup from Highway 1. The Stirling Ranges are just 120km away, travelling via the Borden- Boxwood Hill Road through the Corackerup Nature Reserve From Perth CBD to Quaalup it is 540km using the following route: Stay on the Albany HWY until Arthur River, here turn left to Wagin. From Wagin follow the Great Southern HWY, passing Katanning and Broomehill. After Broomehill turn left towards Gnowangerup, from there follow the road to Ongerup and Jerramungup. From Jerramungup travel on the South Coast HWY towards Albany, after 28km turn left into Devil Creek Road, here are signs to "Quaalup Homestead" and the "Fitzgerald River National Park". From Bremer Bay it is 47km for 2WD ( gravel), and for 4WD it is 18km. Make sure you fuel up at Boxwood Hill (coming from Stirling or Albany), Jerramungup (coming from Perth or Esperance) or in Bremer Bay.

Our stay at Quaalup allowed us to see the most varied and fascinating flora of our spring trip to WA, aided by a knowledgable and friendly host. We enjoyed the quiet of the location and the access to parts of the coast and West Mt. Barren which would have been difficult to visit without staying at Quaalup. Walking from the homestead in several directions we could see flora as rich and diverse as any we saw in our drives through the park.

Managed to seriously injure my foot on West Mount Barren (severe swelling, broken bone). Quaalup Homestead had the ice packs and great attention to help make us comfortable in painful circumstances also sourced info re health services availability over Easter weekend.

We did enjoy our stay, although we are local in a sense, and have been here before. We saw the place from another perspective. On the down side, the park was closed the day we arrived, so we where not able to get to Pt Anne. We do appreciate that you need to close the road if there is wet weather.
